Orthopedic Implant Coatings

Orthopedic Implant Coatings

Infection after surgical treatment of orthopaedic injuries represents a major complication in orthopaedic surgery. Such a complication can result in reoperations and worse clinical outcomes, potentially jeopardizing both the limb and the life of the patient. In collaboration with the Bernthal Laboratory at UCLA, the Segura Laboratory is developing “smart," biodegradable implant coatings that can be applied to the surgical site during surgery and prevent or treat infection. These materials can also be used to deliver pain killers and other small molecular drugs into the battlefield.
